San Da (Sparring) can be translated as "Free Hands" and refers to free application of fighting techniques in combat. In the sparring sessions at the academy we will concentrate on the Guo Shu format as it was developed in Taiwan. This is the format many Chinese Martial Arts tournaments follow.

The sparring session is open to all students above level 2 (Yellow II). This is because at this level you should have increased your coordination and control, which makes sparring safe for you and your sparring partners.

We will concentrate on preparation for tournaments, and this session is therefore required if you want to represent the ACMA at a tournament. But even if you do not wish to participate in a tournament, this session is highly recommended because it is not only a great workout, but you will also have the chance to apply what you learned in your Wing Chun classes.

In order to keep sparring as safe as possible, we will break your program into 5 stages. In these stages you will gradually increase your physical strength and endurance as well as instincts and timing. You can go as far as you like, and do not have to go through all the stages if you don't want to.

  • Stage 1: Focus on conditioning and basic punching drills. During this stage you will not have any contact with an opponent, however, you will play "Chinese chess."

  • Stage 2: Add basic kicking to the punching drills. You will start with light contact sparring involving hands only.

  • Stage 3: Medium contact sparring involving hands only. Light contact sparring involving hand and leg techniques.

  • Stage 4: Full contact sparring involving hands only. Medium contact sparring involving hand and leg techniques.

  • Stage 5: You are ready to do full contact sparring involving hand and leg techniques according to Lei Tai rules.

Each of these stages requires you to attend at least a certain number of sparring sessions before you can advance to the next stage. The exact number of times depends on your own feeling about your readiness as well as permission by Ben. Again, this is for your own and your Gung Fu brothers' and sisters' safety.
